Luis Diaz’s time at Anfield is coming to an end. The Colombian winger is on the verge of completing a high-profile move to Bayern Munich, after Liverpool accepted a £65.5 million offer from the Bundesliga champions.
Despite having two years remaining on his contract, Diaz has long been the subject of interest from across Europe. Talks between Bayern and Liverpool had been ongoing for weeks, with the German club’s initial bid of £58.5 million rejected. A revised package, including add-ons, was finally enough to persuade the Reds to sanction the deal.
Diaz, who joined Liverpool in January 2022 from Porto for a fee rising to £37.5 million, has now been given permission to leave the club’s Asia tour and is expected to travel to Germany to finalise personal terms and undergo a medical.
Liverpool were initially reluctant to part with one of their key attacking players. However, Diaz and his representatives made it clear that his preference was to join Bayern, a move he began pushing for as early as summer 2024. Two separate attempts to negotiate a contract extension with Liverpool failed to bridge the gap between the club’s offer and the player’s demands.
Following Liverpool’s 20th league title triumph last season, Diaz reaffirmed his desire for a new challenge. With the Reds now feeling they’ve secured full market value, they’ve opted to grant the 27-year-old his move.
Diaz’s departure won’t affect Liverpool’s transfer plans, with Hugo Ekitike already signed to bolster the forward line. The club is not expected to enter the market for another wide attacker at this stage.
Head coach Arne Slot confirmed after Liverpool’s 4-2 pre-season loss to AC Milan that Diaz was left out of the matchday squad due to “a lot of rumours” surrounding his future. The Colombian continued to train with the team but did not feature in any recent friendlies.
“Lucho is training really well with us,” Slot told LFC TV. “But we’ve decided not to play him in the games for now. I can’t say much more.”
For Bayern Munich, Diaz represents a major coup and a key addition to their wide options as they reshape their squad under new management. His arrival adds experience, flair, and proven quality in big matches—a profile that fits perfectly into Bayern’s ambitions to dominate both domestically and in Europe.
Diaz is expected to complete the move in the coming days, marking the end of a successful Anfield chapter and the beginning of a new journey in Bavaria.
