Manie Libbok Finds Purpose Beyond the Pitch During Recovery

April 4, 2025

For Manie Libbok, being sidelined with a knee injury hasn’t been the break he hoped for—but it’s given him a chance to slow down, reset, and reflect.

The Stormers and Springbok flyhalf has been out of action since January 25, when a knock during a United Rugby Championship clash against Leinster forced him off the field. With his return tentatively set for mid-May, Libbok has been navigating life away from the tryline with the same composure he shows on the field.

In a video shared by the Stormers, the 26-year-old opened up about how he’s using this downtime to refocus on personal growth.

“It’s been about embracing the journey,” Libbok shared. “There’s a lot you overlook when you’re in the thick of competition. Now, I’ve had space to think about the things that really matter.”

Among those things: family, self-improvement, and healing—both physically and mentally. Libbok mentioned the important role his wife, Verna-Lee, has played during this period, and gave credit to Stormers’ strength and conditioning coach Nico de Villiers for guiding him through the rehabilitation process.

Coach de Villiers, in turn, has been impressed with Libbok’s commitment and attention to detail.

“Manie’s a real student of the game—and of recovery,” he said. “Once we explained the programme, he locked in. He knows his body well, which makes our job easier. Right now, it’s all about building strength and preparing him to start running again.”

Libbok has been a cornerstone of the Stormers’ campaign this season, starting in nearly every URC match before his injury. While his absence has been felt on the field, his off-field resilience and positive mindset are proving just as influential.

And if this period has taught him anything, it’s that sometimes stepping back is part of moving forward.
