Durban businessman Chockalingam “Roy” Moodley’s attempt to acquire Royal AM’s Premier Soccer League status has reportedly hit a dead end after failing to pass scrutiny from the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
SARS curator Jaco Venter is said to have flagged issues with Moodley’s compliance record, ultimately disqualifying him from the takeover process. Moodley, a controversial figure in business circles, has previously been entangled in allegations of state capture during Jacob Zuma’s presidency.
With Moodley ruled out, other potential buyers could step forward. Businessman David Skosana, who previously led a consortium that tabled a R15 million bid, may revive his interest. Additionally, speculation is rife that a Russian investor is eyeing the club’s PSL status.
Meanwhile, Royal AM’s future hangs in the balance. The club is significantly behind on its fixture schedule, having played just 11 matches while missing 12. With only seven weeks left before the season wraps up on May 24, any new owner would face the daunting task of squeezing in three matches per week to fulfill the season’s commitments.
As SARS works to finalize the sale and settle outstanding debts, Royal AM’s fate remains uncertain, leaving fans and players in limbo.
