URC Preview – Round 17

The Hollywoodbets Sharks, along with the rest of South Africa’s URC sides, return to home soil for the second-last round of the regular season. With play-off spots and log positions still up for grabs, there’s plenty at stake across the board. Shaun Goosen sets the scene.

Hollywoodbets Sharks 1/16 | Draw 43/1 | Ospreys 8/1

The Sharks’ tour victories in Edinburgh and Belfast have set them up perfectly to nail down fourth place on the table. Sitting on 53 points, they’re well clear of Cardiff in fifth and still within striking distance of the Bulls in second. With their top players back in rhythm, they’ll be targeting a full five-point haul on home soil.

Ospreys boosted their standing with a convincing win over the Dragons, climbing to 11th and staying just three points off the play-off cut. But a two-match tour of South Africa is a tough way to end the season. They’ve done well to stay in the race, but it likely ends here in Durban.

Verdict: Hollywoodbets Sharks (-17.5) at 9/10

Sharks should cruise to a bonus-point win.

Munster 3/10 | Draw 23/1 | Ulster 26/10

Munster are still outside the top eight and need to make every game count. Level with Benetton on 41 points but sitting ninth on points difference, they have a chance to put a serious dent in Ulster’s playoff hopes with a win at home. Ulster, down in 12th on 38 points, are on the brink.

Both sides are on three-game losing streaks, but Munster have the edge here. They’re at home, and they came close to nicking the reverse fixture in Belfast earlier this season, going down by just three points.

Verdict: Ulster (+7.5) at 9/10

Munster to sneak it, but Ulster should stay within touching distance.

Bulls 1/20 | Draw 46/1 | Cardiff 8/1

The Bulls are sitting pretty in third, just one point behind Glasgow and well placed to snatch second by the end of the regular season. Jake White has once again steered his team into a strong position, and a home win over Cardiff looks very likely at this stage of the campaign.

Cardiff have fought their way back into contention after a five-game slump, and now hold fifth spot. But this South African tour will be their biggest test yet—and likely the deciding factor in whether they make the playoffs.

Verdict: Bulls (-17.5) at 9/10

Expect the Bulls to roll on at Loftus.

Benetton 12/10 | Draw 2/1 | Glasgow Warriors 15/20

Benetton are clinging to eighth place but have a brutal finish ahead with a trip to Munster next week. They were excellent in that 42-31 win over the Lions and will need a similar performance in Treviso if they’re to get past a wounded Glasgow side.

The Warriors haven’t looked the same since their 52-point hammering at Leinster. A sluggish win over Zebre and a home loss to the Bulls followed, and they’re now just a point ahead of the Bulls. With another showdown against Leinster looming, this one’s vital.

Verdict: Glasgow 15/20

Should be close, but the visitors have more to play for.

Stormers 1/100 | Draw 100/1 | Dragons 15/1

The Stormers are finding their groove at the right time, picking up strong wins over Connacht and Benetton in recent weeks. Sitting sixth, they’re quietly becoming a serious threat again—especially with Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu pulling the strings at flyhalf.

This one could get ugly for the Dragons, who are unlikely to match the pace and power of the hosts.

Verdict: Stormers (-30.5) at 15/20

Expect a comfortable win in Cape Town.

Leinster 1/100 | Draw 75/1 | Zebre 14/1

It’s unclear how many front-liners Leo Cullen will name after last week’s Champions Cup loss to Northampton, but even with rotation, Leinster should have too much firepower. Zebre have shown some grit this season, but they’re likely to be on the wrong end of a backlash in Dublin.

Verdict: Leinster (-31.5) at 17/20

The hosts to bounce back in style.

Connacht 9/20 | Draw 21/1 | Edinburgh 39/20

Connacht have fallen off badly this season. Four straight defeats and 14th place on the log tell the story, with the coaching situation in flux since Pete Wilkins stepped down. It’s hard to see them turning things around now.

Edinburgh weren’t great against Bath last week, but they’ve still got plenty to play for. Sitting 10th and just two points off the top eight, they’re due a big performance.

Verdict: Edinburgh 39/20

Back the Scots to take their chance.

Lions 9/20 | Draw 21/1 | Scarlets 39/20

The Lions kept their playoff hopes alive with a solid win over Connacht last time out. They’re still six points adrift in 13th, but with two games left, a strong finish could see them sneak in.

They face a Scarlets team riding high after an upset win over Leinster. Sitting seventh, they’ll be confident—but playing at altitude is always a factor, and it could tip things in the Lions’ favour.

Verdict: Lions 9/20

Should be tight, but the altitude edge goes to the home side.
