As Orlando Pirates prepare to usher in a new chapter under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, attention turns to who will inherit the captain’s armband following the retirement of long-time skipper Innocent Maela. While several senior figures are in contention, one name has emerged with growing support—19-year-old defender Mbekezeli “TLB” Mbokazi.

Former Pirates player and development mentor Gerald Modabi has thrown his weight behind Mbokazi’s candidacy, believing the promising centre-back has the temperament and leadership qualities to lead the Soweto giants in the upcoming season.

Speaking on the Total Football podcast, Modabi said,

“Mbekezeli is good enough to be captain. Age shouldn’t matter. If you’re good enough to play, you’re good enough to lead. And this young man has shown just how much he loves the club through his performances.”

Mbokazi made his breakthrough into the senior squad during the second half of last season, stepping in during an injury crisis and quickly cementing his place in the starting XI. His rapid rise also earned him a call-up to the national team, where he made his Bafana Bafana debut.

Modabi, who worked closely with Mbokazi at reserve level, highlighted his dedication and passion for the game—even offering a light-hearted anecdote about the player’s appetite for both football and food.

“He wants to eat even five minutes before training begins,” joked Modabi. “But when it comes to football, he’s all business.”

Coach Ouaddou has already tested the waters during pre-season, giving Mbokazi the captain’s armband in friendlies—despite the presence of more experienced teammates like vice-captain Tapelo Xoki. That move sparked intrigue among fans and pundits alike, potentially signalling a shift toward youth leadership at the club.

Other players remain in the mix. Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine and defender Nkosinathi Sibisi—both of whom wore the armband at times last season—are considered strong contenders. Sibisi, in particular, led the team for much of the campaign with Maela and Xoki sidelined.

“Bhodela [Sibisi] can certainly take up the role with confidence,” said Modabi. “And Chaine is also a solid choice. Pirates have a history of appointing captains from the backline.”

The Buccaneers begin their 2025/26 campaign this Saturday with an MTN8 quarterfinal clash against Polokwane City at Orlando Stadium. Whether the armband goes to experience or youthful promise, one thing is clear—leadership will be a cornerstone of Ouaddou’s vision for the season ahead.
